Lenny Kravitz: Forever Young

Renowned as a versatile American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and actor; Lenny Kravitz is not just an icon of music but also a symbol of timeless style and vitality. As he turns 60, we look not only at his life achievements but also his cross generational influence.

A Young Talent

Kravitz's musical journey began early. Raised in a musically diverse environment by TV news producer Sy Kravitz and actress Roxie Roker, he soaked in influences ranging from the Jackson 5 to The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.

Accepted into Beverly Hills High School's music program alongside future stars like Nick Cage and Slash, Kravitz graduated in 1982, ready to pursue his passion.

Lenny’s Path to Music and Parenthood

Rebranding himself as Romeo Blue, Lenny was determined to carve his own path in the music world. However, racial biases got in the way, with record labels criticising his music for not being white or black enough.

He decided to move to New York City, where he found something other than musical opportunity. He fell in love with actress Lisa Bonet and tied the knot in 1987.

His breakthrough came next when he met recording engineer Henry Hirch, and by 1989 he released his debut album ‘Let Love Rule’ which introduces his unique blend of rock, funk, and soul.

Around the same time, he embraced early parenthood with the arrival of his daughter Zoë.

Record-Breaking Success

Despite balancing fatherhood and his musical passion at only 24 years old, Kravitz produced several hit songs that continue to resonate with audiences of all ages. Tracks like ‘It Ain't Over 'til It's Over’ from 1991, and ‘Again’ from 2000 achieved top 10 positions on the Billboard Top 100 chart.

Additionally, classics such as 1993’s ‘Are You Gonna Go My Way’, ‘Fly Away’ from 1998 and ‘American Woman’ in 1999 made their mark on the Alternative Airplay chart.

Kravitz's success earned him numerous awards, including four consecutive Grammy Awards from 1999 to 2002 in the Best Male Rock Vocal Performance category, setting a world record for the most wins in this category.

From Music to Movies

Following his musical success, Lenny ventured into acting, a natural step for a multi-talented multidimensional man who has never been shy of the camera.

He featured in the critically acclaimed film ‘Precious’ in 2009, which conveniently landed him the role as Stylist ‘Cinna’ in the widely successful 2012-2013 films ‘The Hunger Games’. He was nominated for an Image Award for both films, in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture – showing versatility in his talents.

“My best shape is not behind me; it’s in front of me right now. I'm moving that bar as I get older.”

Health is Wealth

As Lenny embraces his later years, he's all about staying healthy. By sticking to a plant-based diet, he looks and feels remarkably youthful—you could mistake him for a 30 year old not 60. Kravitz is also an advocate for holistic self-care, which he believes is the key to aging gracefully.

“With the genes that I have from my parents and my grandparents, we don’t seem to visibly age like one might think, so all of those things together—with, of course, taking care of yourself, putting the right things in your body and taking care of your mind and spirit—have contributed to aging just being about experiencing and living, not about falling apart.”

Kravitz sets a new standard for body confidence, inspiring individuals of all ages, especially those who fear their prime is behind them.

Fashion Forward at Any Age

Lenny now embraces a more relaxed lifestyle, enjoying cycling, paddleboarding, and spending time with his grandchildren, whom he credits with keeping him youthful. But don't expect him to retire his guitar anytime soon.

He's still deeply into his music, dropping his latest album ‘Blue Electric Light’ just this March and heading on tour later this year. He’s also recently been in the spotlight for earning his well-deserved star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. During the ceremony, his daughter Zoë Kravitz affectionately poked fun at his risqué fashion choices.

“I’ve seen your incredible dedication to your art,” she said before adding, “But mostly, I’ve seen through your shirts.”

It’s refreshing to see Lenny maintain his sense of style into his later years.
