From Barcelona to Bristol: Carolina's Journey of Growth and Gratitude at Capgemini

Carolina Sánchez Moreno, Project Coordinator at Capgemini Engineering, shares her Redefiner story to celebrate Women in Engineering Day

Life/Redefined shines a spotlight on inspirational Redefiners who prove that, as you enter your 50s and beyond, anything is possible. Here is Carolina's story.

The Beginning

My name is Carolina, born and raised in Barcelona. As I approach my 50th level, I find myself reflecting on a journey filled with challenges, growth, and incredible opportunities.

I began my professional path with a degree in Agricultural Engineering, followed by a master’s in Health and Safety, a field where I mainly evolved in my first years of working existence and culminating in a leadership role as Head of the H&S Department on one of Spain’s most significant public construction projects. After the project concluded, I joined some of my university colleagues at one of the biggest Spanish gardening company, where I worked as a Health, Safety, Quality, and Environment Coordinator, role that I loved and enjoyed every day.

However, the financial crisis which shocked the world led me to move to the UK to start a completely new life. My new adventure started in Glasgow, working in a call center, and four years after I found myself in Bristol working for an Engineering company.

The Career Development

In January 2022 Capgemini acquired the company I was working for. Our roles and tasks for our client were not affected but slowly we noticed the transition to a bigger and more powerful company. New systems, values and platforms were introduced. Personally, it was quite soon when I started noticing the vast amount of great programmes, courses, campaigns, partnerships, social communities and other unvaluable benefits that Capgemini had to offer to all of us.

Happily, I continued working with my clients with no significant changes in my day-to-day work. Less than a year within Capgemini and thanks to my amazing manager, who recognised my true potential and always believed in me, I started a new role as a team coordinator for a hugely important and high-profile client project. It was challenging at the beginning, but just after a few months I realised how happy, and fortunate, I was in my new role.

At the beginning of 2024 I was nominated for the Capgemini Be The Future talent programme, which is designed to support high performing employees. It was easily my best working experience ever. During this programme I learnt not just about my strongest skills, and how to improve my weakest ones, but also one of the most important things in life, knowing and believing in my true self.

Knowledge Sharing

Inspired by the lessons learnt during the Be The Future program, I linked my passion for inclusive futures with my social skills and became the Bristol Community Champion. I’ve hosted the first Get Together Networking events monthly at Bristol office. I’m also taking part in the Early and Emerging Talent programme, mentoring a junior employee and supporting new starters.

From the very beginning, I have always felt cared for, appreciated, and supported within the Engineering industry, although I recognise that it was a challenging one at times. Being a significantly male environment, I always missed the warmth and ease of non-verbal communication, openness, confidence, and mutual understanding that comes from connecting with women.

Navigating my career in a male dominated industry was my biggest challenge, but at the same time it gave me the tools to perform, and to become the professional woman I am today.

The Community

Nowadays, I live the sisterhood that I missed in the early stages of my Engineering career, growing stronger at Capgemini. The care and support from women of all ages and backgrounds across the company is growing every day, thanks in part to important employee groups such as Women in Engineering, where personal and professional connections deepen, and thanks in part to the industry becoming more inclusive! It fills my heart with joy.

The Experience and Gratitude

I’ve worked for Capgemini for more than 3 years now, and I am immensely grateful for all the great experiences, the knowledge gained, the inspiring people I have the opportunity to work with daily, and the fantastic initiatives I’m involved in. I am very excited to discover my next chapter at Capgemini, and where it will take me.

We are big believers that you should be able to design a life you love and not stick to a linear path, especially when it comes to your career choices. In fact, we'd go as far to say that the concept of retirement in its current form needs to be retired. Yes, that's right, there's no rulebook here!
